Did you already know that formaldehyde is the number-one indoor air pollutant? Formaldehyde “off-gasses” from walls, furniture, rugs, and more. Not so good for the ol’ lung tissue!
Having access to fresh, chemical-free air is easier to achieve than you think — thanks to plants.
6 Ideal Plants for Cleaning the Air that You Breathe

certain houseplants are fantastic at turning toxic air into fresh air
These days, the quality of the air that we breathe is a bigger issue than we like to admit — and indoor air-quality is even more important — so I was glad to discover recently that there are plants that have been scientifically proven to remove significant amounts of toxins from the air inside of our homes!
“…few things are healthier
than having pure air to breathe!”
Of these “superplants,” there are a few that have additional qualities. They:
- ◕ are fuller-bodied
- ◕ are more resistant to mites
- ◕ do not require abundant direct sunlight and like darker rooms
Here’s a list of my ideal plants for the modern home. You can ask about them at your local garden center:
- ▸ dracaenas
- ▸ golden pathos
- ▸ boston fern
- ▸ syngonium
- ▸ dumb cane
- ▸ schleffera

many fern plants are excellent at purifying the air within a room
Of course, there are more than just six plants that clean indoor air, but in my research I discovered that these are among the easiest to grow and keep in your home.

The good thing about most of these plants is that they are not hard to care for. I have the opposite of a green thumb but have mananged to keep all of mine alive for 6 months! The mother-in-law’s tounge is the best as it only needs to be water once every two months in the cooler parts of the year.
Yes, mother’s-in-law tongue is the miracle plant. It cleans the air, looks beautiful, and is *very* hard to kill!

Our place feels so dead without plants. We need to give it some life with a few houseplants. I was meaning to do this before the new year, but never got around to it. Thanks for the reminder, Dane!
House Plants are on my to-do list this year… I’m going to keep your recommendations handy!
Thanks!
Joel, thanks for commenting! Yes, the downside is: houseplants are a lot of work. But they purify the air and, perhaps more important, I think they have a positive, healing impact on the human psyche!
